ICAN was founded by Friar. We thought some of you might be
interested in more information about him.
It was while on
a 300 mile English sea journey by canoe that he discovered the
Sidmouth Folk Festival in 1977, from which ICAN evolved. This
was reported in a documentary on ITV3 in 2008. Friar
has an Ecology based Honours Degree, majoring in renewable energy.

Here is Friar in his Canadian canoe (named "Life" in four languages!).
This photograph was taken during a 2 month journey in Greece
which was reported every month for a year, in a national canoe
magazine. Facts relating to the destruction of the environment
which Friar observed during this trip, were reported repeatedly
throughout the series, which ended in 1997.
Friar's main interest is conservation and enjoying
the outdoors. He has cycled round the Swiss Alps; photographed
wild life in the jungles of Nepal; walked through part of the
Himalayas and photographed Mount Everest. He has descended
the UK's deepest pothole and he practiced some of the martial
arts.
